Ever watch one of those home decorating shows on TV where the homeowner sees their half finished room and starts freaking out because it is not at all what they were expecting? Then the decorator calmly and confidently says "trust me, it will look beautiful when it is finished". Of course, by the end of the show, everything does come together perfectly and the result is a gorgeous new room and very happy homeowners.
Well...we're at that "half finished" stage in our family room.
The large pieces of furniture are in place (the lamps and side tables are temporarily borrowed from another room).
But we're still waiting on the pillows and other accessories.
And of course the wallpaper. Without the wallpaper, we can't hang drapes or any artwork.
It is a strange feeling to be both the skeptical homeowner and the confident "decorator"...
Though I can honestly say that there are things that I already love about this room, so I'm breathing a sigh of relief. It is pretty cool to finally begin to realize the vision that has been in my head for so long!

I never like anything that I do right away. I have to live with it. And then I blog about and strangers give me confirmation that it's pretty. :P
On that note....I like how the room is coming together. I'm a very visual person so I have to see things to get them..and I'm getting this. Good work. And who needs pillows when you have dogs? Texture.
That is true...and it's all about the vision.
It's looking great and I have no worries that you're going to take it from great to extraordinary! Can't wait to see the final details and touches to come into the space.
Loving the warm colours and I adore your couch!
Love it when a vision comes together. Great feeling!
It's so hard--if I love something right away, it often wears off. Usually things just have to grow on me. It looks like you have a GREAT base! It will be fun to see the details pile on.
Those finishing touches make all the difference, don't they? You're room is coming together beautifully.
Carrie, you SHOULD be confident in the space you've designed. It is beautiful and it's not even complete. I'm still so in love with your sofa, your reupholstered chair, the rug, and your thrift store coffee table. Lovely all around.
It is going to be so fabulous when it's all "done" - the window treatments, pillows, and wallpaper are going to be the beautiful touches that make this room. You've got that awesome reupholstered chair, a great coffee table find, an awesome rug, and that's just to name a few. I bet you're chomping at the bit to see it all finished.
Girl, I'm feeling "Brownstone Chic" up in here!!!! This room has come so far!! The sofa is beautiful, the fireplace looks so good dark, the rug is outstanding, love the trim/crown and the grey ceiling...everything you've done so far is wonderful!! I think the more neutral colored grass cloth (plus all that additional texture) is going to really help. I can't wait to see those Ballard Design drapes go up! (You're still doing those, right?) I have the utmost confidence in you and Chris (and Casey). I mean, look at your track record!!!
It looks great! That coffee table and your lamps are awesome. I just shopped around for bamboo roman shades last weekend - did you get custom shades?
It is utterly amazing how far this room has come (the dogs sure seem comfortable). This is the point that is critical and you nailed it. All of the other parts are just going to move it closer to your vision and pull it all together!
It all looks great now that you have your rug and furniture in place. The upholstered chair is striking and I like the look of the couch. You also have amazing natural light.
It's all looking so good. In fact, your sofa is smoking hot! So close to the finish line now...
This room looks so inviting and cozy, I just love it...I'm specially in love with that rug! I think the final results are always a bit different than what we first envision but that can be a good thing! You guys have done amazing job so far.
Casey, the base layer already looks so much better than about 98% of the living spaces in the country. I'm really glad you chose to do a base layer because I think it will be super informative to your readers once the finishing touches are put in place. I'd love to see a picture of the room looking exactly like this once the grasscloth is up and before you do the accessories. So curious to see what the added texture will do to the space. Couch...LOVE!
After seeing your other rooms I am 100% sure this room will be everything you imagined! I can't wait to see the grasscloth wallpaper in here. Love all your natural light and that gorgeous rug!
I love it now - and the rest of the details are only going to make it better.
It's so hard to be patient (not my strong suit!) but it's looking like it's definitely headed in the right direction! :)
Love the room! Can you pull the furniture away from the walls a bit?
I'm the same way :-) Even though I too "see" it way ahead of time, when I get started I get antsy and then my husband (whom I hire as my assistant) tells me/reminds me "Just wait! You don't have it completely done! It always turns out like you want...and usually even better." Isn't he a gem :-)
But like you, the work I do in our own home seems more exasperating than what I do for a client...probably cuz I've gotta live with it. Haha!
I'm loving the way your room is coming together. Your coffee table and chair look great with the rug. Can't wait to see the finished product.
It's looking great! I love the table and how cute are your sweet puppies!?
It's coming together so beautifully! The light in the room is just perfect and the sofa looks like it was made for that wall! Can't wait to see what the wallpaper looks like!
You could have fooled me... It looks great as it is now. I can't imagine how will it come out with all the finishing touches.
Good luck and try not to overdo it!
I would never freak if this was the half done I saw- it looks great so far!! The rug really is amazing and I just LOVE all the colors in it!
Come on wallpaper, I'm dying to see the rest now!
You can give me a room with only that rug and sofa in it and I would be completely *THRILLED*! It's looking amazing...I can't even imagine the level of jealousy when all the little deets come together (c: ha! Lookin' good, decorator! (c:
Wow! The base layer is impressive and I chuckled at the comment by another reader that your base is better than most peoples finished! So true. Have faith, I can tell it will be amazing when finished!
