Ring, Ring...

"Hello, Carrie?"
"Yes"
"This is 1978 calling. I'd like my ceiling fan back now."

Sigh...

So clearly time is up on this brass beauty, but it will need to be replaced by another. Although ceiling fans get a bad rap, one is absolutely necessary to make it through a hot & humid New England summer in our un-airconditioned house.  This fan is in our family room, which is our next major project on the "To Do" list, so there's no better time like the present to get a new one.

I came across a couple of interesting options by Matthews Fan Company

But...I think they might be a little too interesting in my house. I don't exactly want our ceiling fan to be the center of attention.

So that brings us to the standard issue white fans with an attached light readily available at Home Depot and Lowes...

But before going down that route, we might try what Jenny suggested in recent post which is to spray paint the fan the color of the ceiling so that it almost disappears. Then add a drum shade over the light fixture to update it. In fact, there's a drum shade kit available at Shades of Light that might do the trick.

Now imagine it all white.  What do you think?

Or have you come across any good looking ceiling fan options?

I like that drum shade!!

We went to a local independent lighting store and they had some better options than just the standard Home Depot fans. There were more expensive per fan but we bought a bunch and they gave us a contractor discount! Bonus!

I have air conditioning, but I'm still not ready to give up my ceiling fan. I love to have the windows open whenever possible. There are some great options available, like the previous commenter mentioned at HD and Lowes. I suppose your choice would depend on the style you're going for in the room. With it being a historical home, the first two fixtures might be good choices.

I think that fan with the shade is brilliant! Painting it the ceiling colour is also brilliant so I think you've got a winner.

Great ideas! I bet it would totally disappear by painting it the ceiling color. And I also love the idea of the drum shade kit. That looks beautiful and gives me an idea for our ceiling fan too! Thanks! :)

I so hear you! We have one in the living room too, which is a total eye sore. I try to conveniently leave it out of most pictures. Anyway, I love the idea of spray painting and taking the light off entirely. That way it doesn't call as much attention to itself -- and lamplight is so much better than overhead light. I'd like to do that with our fan, but that is way, way down the line on the list of things to do...

y'know...I don't think I have ever shopped for a ceiling fan before. But I'm with you, they are a necessary evil and if you have to have one, I'm thinkin' that is a pretty darn good option...my only question is does the shade make funny noises when the fan is on??? Those are the weird things that I think about...(c:

Sounds like a good plan! I love the drum shade and painting it should help the blades disappear.

I am going to order the Elle ceiling fan by Craftmade - it's amazing! it has two shades for an uplight and a downlight...

Just need to pick the color shades...

Those are some beautiful picks. Oh, I'm actually having a tough time deciding which one looks best. But, yeah, the bottom one would look good in white.
